Hogwarts at Home: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – Grades 2 (mature) – 6 – Winter 2021 – 10 Weeks
Thursday, January 14 2021 @ 1:00PM - Thursday, March 25 2021 @ 2:30PM EST| $250.00
In this course, students will be immersed in the magical world of wizards and wands, as they read J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
The Daily Prophet reports that “because of the recent health events which have transpired in Muggle society, Professor Dumbledore has instructed all first-year Hogwarts students to receive their instruction at home.” Each class will begin with a teacher-led read aloud from that week’s reading assignment. Students will be given the option of practicing the important skill of reading aloud as well. We will learn together through the use of engaging literature, class discussion, comprehension activities, and videos. Learning and documenting new vocabulary words will be a focus of this course, as will literary analysis. Prior to the beginning of the course, families may opt to receive a Hogwarts Acceptance Letter via the Muggle postal service. Wands at the ready, magical new adventures await!
Hogwarts robes are not required for class attendance but are strongly encouraged. I recommend the Rubie’s brand, available on Amazon. Wands will be used during classes; these can be homemade or purchased online. My personal choice for wands is The Nobel Collection, available on Amazon; these wands are sturdy and come in packaging like Mr. Ollivander himself would have used. Students are asked to keep their course materials in a three-ring binder. Basic art supplies such as markers, colored pencils, glue, and blank paper will be useful. Parents may be asked to print handouts ahead of time, to be used during classes. Students will be asked to watch the movie version of the text after class seven; it is rated PG and parents will need to rent, borrow, or purchase the movie for at-home viewing.
Students will be responsible for reading three chapters outside of class each week. Students may read from the text or listen to an audio recording. Brief comprehension and vocabulary quizzes will be given each week; these will be taken through CANVAS. Students will complete a final project, to be presented during week nine of the course.
Registration deadline is December 15, 2020.
There must be a minimum of 5 students to run this class.
