Who wants to increase vocabulary??

Whether you’d like to learn some “smart words” for every day speaking, enrich your writing, or simply beat your mom at Scrabble, this class is for you!

One of the key indicators of students’ success in school, on standardized tests, and indeed, IN LIFE, is their vocabulary. The reason for this is simply that the knowledge anyone has about a topic is based on the vocabulary of that information (Marzano & Pickering, 2005).

In this ten-week class, students will explore a several new words each week, learning how to apply it in speaking and writing.

In each class, we will:

– predict the meaning of the new word

– discuss if we have heard it before, and where we heard it/in what situation

– learn the meaning of the word

– discuss synonyms and antonyms

– read an example sentence using the word

– read a famous quote using the word

– discuss other details such as etymology and derivatives

Classes will be interactive.

Students will also be expected to keep a spiral notebook/journal/notebook with paper of their new words – one page per word with the details we have learned in class.  Homework will involve creating a CREATIVE WORD SPLASH for each word to help solidify what was taught in class.

Finally, to review what we have learned, we will play KAHOOT in class to review the words from the past week!

Have your child come expand their minds —– in a whimsical way!

Some of the words students might learn (but not limited to):

Lackadaisical, Melancholy, Pertinent, Inception, Apoplectic, Abominable, Loquacious, Ambivalence, Arbitrary, Sporadic, Egocentric, Sycophant, Bombastic, Discretion, Ubiquitous, Scintillating, Beguiling, Surmise, Rhetoric, Lament, Subjective, Falsify, Whimsical, Jocular, Hoodwink, Shenanigans, Indefatigable, Antipathy, Drudgery, Logophile, Gumption, Perfidious, Disseminate, Empathy, Inquisitively, Bellicose, Obstinate, Exhort, Serendipity, Lethargic.

NOTE: Registration deadline is March 15, 2021.

There must be a minimum of FIVE students to run this class.
